The Trauma-Addiction Connection for First Responders


Description

Understanding the trauma addiction connection is critical for first responders, it can transform response, make interventions more effective and improve outcomes. This course provides a foundational understanding of trauma, its profound connection to addiction, and practical, evidence-based ways to improve responses in the field. The course will cover three main topics: 

  • Understanding Trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and how they connect to Substance Use Disorders. 
  • How to apply a Trauma-Informed Approach to Deflection & Diversion programming and activities in the field.
  • Recognizing and Overcoming the Stigma of Addiction by using person-first language to respectfully and effectively support individuals with SUD.

The training is designed to improve field responses by equipping first responders with a deeper understanding of these concepts and the corresponding evidence-based safety-driven tactical skills.


Learning Outcomes 

  • Understand the causes of trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) 
  • Learn the connection between trauma, ACEs, and the development of substance use disorders.
  • Understand the concept of compassionate response and trauma-informed approaches
