Deflection & Diversion Foundations for First Responders

Description

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of deflection and diversion programming to assist in developing and implementing deflection and diversion initiatives. Learners will gain foundational knowledge of Deflection and Diversion strategies and explore their application and impact across the Sequential Intercept Model (SIM). The training dives into various types of deflection and diversion programs, illustrating how they function at different points within the criminal justice system. Learners will understand how these programs reduce recidivism, improve community safety, and address underlying social issues.

In this course learners will explore how the traditional criminal justice system impacts people with substance use disorders and why deflection and diversion programs are the preferred alternative to traditional criminal justice practices. You’ll learn about the benefits of deflection and diversion programs, including how they reduce repeat offenses, save lives by connecting people to mental health and addiction treatment, and make better use of resources by keeping officers on the street while lowering criminal justice and healthcare costs.
